ISLAMABAD: With his arresting imagery and sublime three-dimensional work, Asadur Rehman encourages viewers to see art through his eyes.

An exhibition of the acclaimed French artist of Pakistani origin went on display at Nomad Art Gallery (NAG) on Wednesday.

A total of 13 brightly-coloured paintings with abstract designs and eight sculptures were spread out across the gallery, showcasing the work of the multifaceted artist.

Argentine Ambassador Rodolfo Martin Saravia and his wife Susana Negri inaugurated the exhibition. Speaking on Rehman’s work, the ambassador said he is delighted to see the combination of paintings and sculptures.

“The work displayed shows the beauty and influence of France, with a local touch. His colours are bright and add life and energy to his work so much so that if a depressed soul looks at it, he will come to life,” the Argentine diplomat said.

French Ambassador Martin Dorance said she is pleased to attend an exhibition that features the work of an artist who is a citizen of both Pakistan and French.

“The way he has taken inspiration from France and Pakistan and blended it together is a very good sign,” she said.

His form of expressionism is very powerful and global. Considering he belongs to two nations, his work acts as a bridge between both. Rehman’s sculptures are very detailed, and speak volumes about the kind of energy that went into them.

Other collections by Rehman, including paintings and sculptures, are part of the gallery’s permanent display.

Having lived and exhibited extensively in France, Pakistan and several other countries, his work displays a kind of maturity that only comes with viewing the world and having enriching experiences. Rehman’s art also resides in the collections of many art connoisseurs in different parts of the world.

Rehman’s work is predominantly abstract, and features oil on canvas. It depicts the spontaneity he sees the world. The uniqueness of his work lies in his imagery and three-dimensional work, which encourages the viewer to see art differently. The beauty of Rehman’s work lies in how he focuses on the beauty in life, speaking to his relentlessly optimistic nature as an artist.

NAG Director Nageen Hyat said that while creating aesthetically brilliant pieces are art, they cannot be viewed as decorative pieces alone.

“[His work possesses] a deeper understanding of the mediums and thought processes. Asad’s sculptures are quite unique, often made of a mix of new and recycled steel, iron and alloy. He can be described as a cosmopolitan artist, sharing art across international borders. His images do not require further words,” she added.

Speaking with The Express Tribune, Rehman said that as an artist, he knows exactly where a splash of paint will fall.

“As for elements of chance, I believe they can also be controlled. Accidents then become an integral part of the painting, and the mystery of art lies in something you cannot really pin-point,” he said.

The exhibition continues till November 22.
