Lahore High Court (LHC) issued a notice on Tuesday in connection with a petition seeking the suspension of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) elections slated to be held on December 5. Justice Shams Mahmood Mirza issued the notice after hearing a petition filed by Young Doctors’ Association (YDA) secretary Salman Kazmi. He told the court that the PMDC had made submission of nomination papers conditional on a Rs200,000 deposit per candidate. Kazmi said this was illegal and negated the basic rules of democracy. He said it would not be possible for every candidate to deposit the aforementioned amount to contest the elections. Kazmi requested the court to declare the provision illegal and unconstitutional. He also asked the court to suspend the elections till the fate of his petition had been decided.
