Unbefitting: PM’s remarks belie nation’s founding premise, says JI

LAHORE:

Jamaat-i-Islami ameer Sirajul Haq said on Thursday that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s remarks regarding the nation’s future lying in a liberal Pakistan amounted to negating the Two-Nation Theory. Addressing the central executive committee of the National Labour Federation, Haq said it was tragic that the chief of a political party that claimed descent from the party credited with founding the nation was contradicting the very premise it was conceived on. He said the Constitution declared Pakistan an Islamic Republic. Haq counselled Sharif to desist from making statements that contradicted the Constitution. Recalling that he had once remarked that the cultures of India and Pakistan were congruent and borders between the two states were unnecessary, Haq said such statements did not befit the head of the government and the PM should be ashamed.
