Perera was particularly unlucky to miss out on a well-deserved century when he was dismissed by Ravi Rampaul on 99. The left-handed opener faced just 92 balls, hitting six fours and four sixes, to ensure that Thirimanne had the luxury of taking his time to settle in despite the hosts chasing a potentially tricky target of 225 in 38 overs in a rain-curtailed match.
Tillakaratne Dilshan opened with Perera and gave the hosts a flying start as they made 40-0 in four overs before Dilshan was bowled by Sunil Narine.
By the time West Indies had dismissed Perera, the match was already out of their reach and Dinesh Chandimal put on 29 with Thirimanne to get Sri Lanka over the line.
Earlier on, Johnson Charles and Marlon Samuels had made half-centuries to give the visitors a good base going into the final few overs. However, the lower order never got going and weren’t helped by some calamitous running — with four run outs in the final seven balls.
