ISLAMABAD:

Researchers and experts have emphasised the need to focus on targeted research for a long term and sustained development of the agriculture sector rather than sanctioning subsidies for farmers.

These views were expressed by researchers at an in-camera policy seminar titled ‘Fiscal Space for Investment in Agriculture- A review of Taxes and Subsidies in Agriculture in Pakistan’.

The seminar was arranged by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research (NFSR) to discuss research findings on net fiscal position of the agriculture sector. The study was conducted in partnership with Pakistan Strategy Support Program, a project of International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).
