The official tribute
“Our forefathers led us to independence from Dogra rule 68 years ago and today we stand as proud Pakistanis, honouring their commitment,” G-B Chief Minister Hafeezur Rahman said.
He met with all war heroes who were present on the occasion. Sitting with them in the historic garden Chinar Bagh – home to the current G-B Legislative Assembly, he told them how much respect he had for all of them.
“All of us salute you for the bravery you showed in liberating the region for us,” Rahman added.
He also paid tribute to all those who had sacrificed their lives for the emancipation of G-B. Along with other government officials, Rahman laid wreaths on the graves of war heroes who had fought valiantly in the armed struggle against Dogra rule, liberated the region and announced accession of G-B to Pakistan on
November 1, 1947.
“It is our responsibility to work collectively for the welfare of the people and acknowledge all those who ensured this was done in the past,” he said.
Later, a contingent of police presented the guard of honour. A number of citizens and students also participated in the ceremony.
