Two suspects held for beating woman ‘thief’

Move comes after a ‘policeman’ thrashing video goes viral

KARACHI: Two suspects were rounded up on Wednesday after a video which went viral on social and electronic media showing a woman allegedly caught for stealing valuables from a shopping centre in Karachi being beaten by a man under the garb of a police uniform.

The woman was caught by people after she allegedly stole some valuables from Gulf Shopping Centre in Clifton on October 22. Later she was shifted to Women Police Station in Saddar after a case was registered against her at Clifton Police Station.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah directed IGP Sindh to conduct an inquiry about the incident.

The police officials said that the suspect, who was under the garb of a police uniform and thrashing a woman, was not a cop but was just wearing a uniform.

The police later raided the shopping centre and arrested the two suspects allegedly involved in the incident.

Her husband beat her and other women told her it’s probably her fault

A key suspect, namely Akbar, is one of the two detainees under the police custody while further investigation is under way.

No police man has right to beat and on top in front of her kid. then you create target killers and people against police. what you think this kid will be good man after seeing all this, because he is minor and cannot stop this police officer that doesn't mean he will forget everything Shame Shame Shame.. now what ? nothing. Court has to do something which will be leason but will it be............................

When are you going to learn to become a civilized society? You need another 100 years to understand what is law and what is unlawful, If this women is guilty then should be punished by the courts in accordance with the law of the land. How would you like your mother and sister and daughter to be told that she would be raped in front of everyone and especially a young child? Shameful creature in the guise of a human being. No understanding of Islam ,uneducated and uncouth human being.

If I steal something and I get caught, the police must cut my hands or whatever in their own places. Not infront of public. Start being a grownup. @Zafar:

It is not about being guilty or not guilty, not even about gender discrimination. It is about unduly humiliating a PERSON through vigilantism, without any involvement of the law. It could have been your mother, or your father for that matter, who could have been mistaken for committing theft. How about your mother being slapped in the face in front of you, guilty or not guilty?

Jalbani Baloch | 8 years ago | Reply The police should act swifly and bring to book all those people, who were involved in the maltreatment of woman, who was alleged to have stolen some valuables from a Shopping Mall. Women are a sign of respect, and under no circumstances, they should be mistreated on any grounds. If the lady was caught stealing or doing something wrong, the people should have simply handed her to the Police for action under the law. Not only woman, but even such kind of treatment, cannot be delivered to a man, if involved in such case. It is only the Police, which has to take action against the criminals in accordance with the set law of the land.
