PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court extended the bail of former K-P minister Senator Sitara Ayaz till the next date of hearing.

A divisional bench comprising Chief Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel and Justice Musarat Hilali took up a writ petition on Wednesday filed by Ayaz through her attorney.

The petitioner’s attorney, Syed Muddasir Amir, informed the bench the Ehtesab Commission issued an arrest warrant for his client who was already being investigated by the National Accountability Bureau since 2013. The bench sought replies from the bureau.

Amir said the EC had issued arrest warrants for Ayaz over alleged misappropriation of funds in various projects during her tenure as provincial minister for social welfare. It also accused Ayaz of misusing her authority.

He said the warrants were nothing more than an attempt to victimise Ayaz. He questioned the legality of the EC, saying the provincial government had only notified the authority a year after its establishment.

The attorney said all enquiries and arrest warrants by the EC should be declared null and void.

The counsel for the EC contended the cases being investigated by the commission were separate from those being looked into by NAB. The chief justice adjourned the hearing till November 10.
