LAHORE:

The Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) has withdrawn its candidates for chairman and vice-chairman in union council 210 (Faisal Town) in favour of a Jamaat Islami (JI) affiliate who is contesting as an independent.

The UC includes Ijaz Block and D Block Faisal Town, Government Employees Housing Society, P and N Block of Model Town Extension and Ghazali Flats. The voters registered in the UC are around 19,000.

Amir Nisar Khan, a former naib nazim for two terms, says he is associated with the JI but is contesting as an independent. The six ward councillor candidates he has endorsed include a PTI nominee, Malik Saleem Yaseen.

On withdrawing her papers in favour of Khan, PTI candidate for deputy chair Dr Anees Fatima says the party has decided to support Khan against the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz candidates. She says she respects the party’s decision.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Khan says besides the PTI voters, several disgruntled PMLN voters are also supporting him.

PML-N candidates Muhammad Asim Rehman (for chairmanship) and Syed Rizwan Shah (for vice chairmanship) dismiss the claim that any PML-N voter is supporting Khan. He says the UC is a PML-N stronghold.
