Sixteen people were killed and 60 others injured in Khanewal district when their bus met with an accident on Thursday.
Around 80 pilgrims were aboard the vehicle that had started its journey three days ago in Gujranwala, from where they went to Data Darbar in Lahore, Baba Fariduddin Ganjshakar’s shrine in Pakpattan and Baba Haji Sher Dewan’s shrine in Vehari district’s Burewala city.
From Vehari the pilgrims were on their way to Sultan Bahoo’s shrine in Jhang when their speeding bus flipped over, hit a bridge on the Sidhnai-Mailsi link canal in Khanewal’s Mian Channu tehsil and did a rollover twice.
Vehari District Coordination Officer Nasir Jamal Hotiana declared an emergency at the District Headquarters Hospital and directed all the doctors to be on duty.
He said the vehicle was overloaded and the accident was caused by speeding.
