UCs 221, 222 Johar Town: Residents demand better sewage system, roads

LAHORE:

Residents of UC-221 E-Block Johar Town complain of a poor sewerage system and dilapidated roads. There are 17,000 registered voters in the area. Talking to The Express Tribune, several residents said that their locality lacked basic sewerage, drainage systems and drinking water.

Hafiz Asif Iqbal, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), candidate for chairman, said that the provincial government had neglected the area. “As the elections drew close, several roads were dug up,” he said. He said that if elected, he would focus on building a better sewerage and drainage system in the area.

Advocate Sajjad Rabbani, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate for chairman, said that he had been twice elected nazim from the area. “The major problem here is the lack of a proper sewerage system. The problem is being fixed. The roads are also being re-laid,” he said.



In UC-222, a tough competition is expected between the PML-N and the PTI. The union council has 21,395 registered voters.

Talking to The Express Tribune, PML-N candidates said that the densely-populated area faced water supply, sewerage and dilapidated roads problems. “Our campaign is focused on these key issues,” they said.

Malik Qaiser Mehmood, the PTI candidate for chairman, said that he had received an overwhelming response from the youth. “Our campaign’s main focus is the development of infrastructure. Clean drinking water is also a major demand of the people,” he said. He said that there was no public school in the area.
