DI KHAN: The political administration in South Waziristan Agency (SWA) initiated a crackdown against two tribes, arresting 55 people and seizing more than a dozen vehicles from their possession.

According to an official of the political administration, the crackdown was conducted under the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) against Gangi Khel and Karmiz Khel tribes of Wana sub-division.

The Gangi Khel tribe was accused of killing three men—a father and his two sons in Daza Ghundai—while Karmiz Khel tribe was held responsible for placing five kilogrammes of explosives at Wana Agency Headquarters Hospital that was defused by security forces.

Methodology and success

Political administration and khasadar forces placed check posts on all entry and exit routes of Wana, especially Gomal Zam Road linking Wana with Tank and DI Khan.

Talking to The Express Tribune, the official said five people were arrested in Tank and two vehicles were confiscated from their possession. The remaining fifty people and another dozen vehicles were seized during the crackdown carried out in Wana. “Mobility of both tribes has been severely restricted as they fear they will be arrested if they step out for their daily business activities in Wana Bazaar,” said a local tribesperson. He said the arrested individuals included people of all ages; some were in fact government employees.

The arrested people have been shifted to the ill-equipped and packed political administration prison located in Scouts Camp in SWA.

The past, present and future

The political administration has initiated a major crackdown in Wana after a long time. Usually, instead of letting the jirga decide, political administration would impose fines on the tribe which tribespeople would pay, settling the issue.

Ahmadzai jirga is expected to meet officials of the political administration to negotiate the release of the held tribespeople.

Abdullah khan | 9 years ago | Reply There are three major pillars of FCR 1 Tribe malik or elder of tribe 2 Jarga 3 collective territorial Responsibility . The only using the third but not acknowledging thr other two. Maliks has no powers nor any allowances which were given before. The PA snatches all powers of maliks so the 3 is also become ineffective. The government is using the name of FCR but not obeying it completely .
