KARACHI: A group of armed men robbed at least Rs4.5 million from a branch of the Meezan Bank located in Landhi on Thursday, while one of the robbers was shot and killed by the security guards at the bank.

According to the police officials and the witnesses, a group of seven men entered the bank in the morning and held the three security guards, bank staff and customers hostage at gunpoint. The robbers tried to flee with three bags full of cash, however, they left behind one of the bags when one of the security guards opened fire at them. As a result, one of the robbers was wounded while the others escaped with around Rs4.5 million and the CCTV cameras installed at the bank.

SHO Ahmed Butt said that the suspect who was injured by the guard’s firing later succumbed to his injuries. The police also seized weapons from his possession. The body of the suspect killed was shifted to the Edhi morgue for identification purpose, after the medico-legal formalities were completed at Jinnah hospital.

Police officials said that they were trying to identify the suspect with the help of National Database and Registration Authority. A case was registered and further investigation is underway.
