China calls for improved security for its workers engaged in CPEC

Chinese ambassador to Pakistan Sun Weidong calls on Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: China has called for better security provision for its workers engaged in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a multi-billion dollars project aimed at starting new economic opportunities in the South Asian region.

These views were expressed by Chinese ambassador to Pakistan Sun Weidong during a meeting with Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Both officials discussed issues related to terrorism, Chinese workers’ security and other regional matters, sources at the Ministry of Interior told The Express Tribune.

The interior minister informed the Chinese ambassador about on-going projects under CPEC, where both countries were keen to invest around $50 billion to make it a more productive project, sources added.

“Islamabad is determined to execute all projects sooner, a step forward for prosperity and peace of the region both powers are pursuing jointly,” a statement issued by the interior ministry quoted Nisar as saying.

Meanwhile, the top Chinese diplomat thanked Pakistan for rescuing a Chinese tourist who had been abducted last year.

The unidentified man had been abducted in May last year from Daraban in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa near the border with Balochistan and the South Waziristan tribal district, both of which are rife with insurgents.

“The Chinese tourist was recovered Saturday night after a successful operation and is to be handed over to the Chinese embassy in Islamabad soon,” Nisar had told a press conference in Islamabad on August 23.
