Woman dies in grenade attack in Kohat

Wanted militant arrested from Nusrat Khel in the district

A 23-year-old woman was killed during a hand grenade attack on a house in Usterzai area of Kohat on Sunday.


An official of Usterzai police told The Express Tribune three men lobbed a hand grenade at the house of Nadeem Abbas on Hangu Road.

“The attackers have been identified as Abul Hasan, Qais Hassan and Ali Raza,” he said. “The three men had a long-standing dispute with Abbas.” The official added the grenade triggered a loud explosion. “Twenty-three-year-old Nanbina was critically wounded and rushed to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries,” he said.The attackers managed to escape after orchestrating the attack. Police arrived on the site to collect evidence after being informed about the incident. An FIR has been registered against the attackers on a complaint filed by Abbas.

Nabbed

Officials of Kohat Cantt police arrested a wanted militant from Nusrat Khel area of Kohat. He has been identified as Jamil Khan. The government had announced a bounty of Rs0.5 million on his head.



A Kohat policeman told The Express Tribune Cantt SHO Umar Hayat had received an intelligence report about Jamil’s whereabouts. “He ordered us to conduct a raid on Jamil Khan’s hideout on Kohat-Hangu Road,” he said. “Jamil was present and tried to evade arrest. However, we managed to take him  into custody.”

According to the official, Jamil was initially taken to Cantt police station and was subsequently shifted to an undisclosed location for further interrogation.

“It was revealed that Jamil had links with banned militant outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban,” he said. “He was wanted for orchestrating a series of attacks on security forces and was involved in various militancy-related incidents in Kohat, Hangu, Peshawar and Fata.”

Another police official said Jamil Khan was caught with an explosive-laden vehicle in Kohat in 2014.

“He had managed to escape after the police intercepted him in Sor Gul area of the district,” he said. “A large cache of material used to make explosives was recovered. Army uniforms were also found in the vehicle.”

He added, “Jamil was also the mastermind of a blast on Peshawar Chowk in Kohat.” DPO Muhammad Sohaib Ashraf has decided to award cash prizes and appreciation certificates for police personnel who took part in the raid. A case has been registered against him in Jarma police station.
