Here are five Instagram trends from the last five years which give us an insight into the app.

Who doesn't love Instagram? The popular photo-sharing app, which has become one of the world's most influential social networks in just a few years, turned five this week.

From a small start-up in 2010, to over 400 million active users as of today, Instagram has redefined the way people view and share photos.

Did you know?

At least 80 million photos are uploaded to the site every day, making it one of the fastest growing social networks. No wonder Zuckerberg paid a heavy sum for it ($1bn) back in 2012.

Independent compiled five Instagram trends and developments over the last five years which give us an insight into the app:

1. Insta is where the celebs are at:

Need updates on celebrities? Catch up on everything from their meals to their appearances and performances on Instagram. Bigwigs nowadays choose to stay connected with their audience without mediators such as their PR representatives or the media.

In Queen Bee's words, "Who run's the world? Girls!"

The top five most followed people on Instagram are females -- Taylor Swift leads the way with 49.7 million followers; Kim Kardashian comes close with 48.2 million; Beyonce falls in third place with 47.3 million; Selena Gomez comes in fourth with 46 million and Ariana Grande lands fifth with 44.7 million.

3. One Direction rules Insta in the UK

The boy-band who rule every girl's heart are also ruling Instagram in the UK. The five most popular people followed on Instagram in Britain are Harry Styles, David Beckham, Niall Horan, Gareth Bale and Liam Payne -- three of who are 1D members.

While bandmate Louis Tomlinson or former member Zayn Malik didn't make the cut, we still say three out of five is a winner.

4. Kendall Jenner is the most liked on Instagram:

While the above mentioned may be winning with the most number of followers, Kendall Jenner puts them all to shame by leading with the most liked image on Instagram.

Her iconic picture lying on the ground with hair shaped like hearts is currently the most popular image on the app with 3.1 million likes, breaking Ellen's selfie record which was forwarded 2 million times on Twitter! Woah!

5. Instagram had a 13-man staff

One would expect Instagram to have a heavy manpower behind the app, but surprisingly, before it was acquired by Facebook it only had a staff of 13 people, six of whom where technical workers.

It's amazing that the app didn't collapse under pressure considering there were 10 million users back then.

Facebook's $1 billion deal included $300 million in cash and the rest in Facebook stocks.

Tariq | 9 years ago | Reply It is indeed an exciting app, and many people are using it to earn money from marketing. Only problem in Pakistan is that Paypal is not available, which is a major issue for anyone seeking to send or receive cash online. Some initiative must be taken to bring Paypal to Pakistan. Maybe ET can lead the way here, and grow its stature among the myriad of local new outlets peddling the same inane news.
