The son of Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid is reportedly set to marry a Hindu girl from Ghaziabad, according to Indian media reports.

Jama Masjid's Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bhukari’s son Shaban Bhukari, 20, has reportedly been in a relationship with the girl for a couple of years.

Initially, the Shahi Imam was against the marriage but has now given his consent after the bride-to-be agreed to embrace Islam.

“She is already learning the Quran,” the Shahi Imam said, according to India Today.

The 20-year-old was formally anointed as the Naib Imam on November 22, 2014 and is pursuing his bachelor's degree in social work at Amity University.

Preparations for the wedding are ongoing, which is to be held in November this year.

The news comes at a time when communal tensions are at a rise in India. Recently, a violent mob killed a man and beat up his son over rumours that they had consumed beef.

Further, a right-wing group in India had issued on Sunday a ‘diktat’ prohibiting Muslims from entering upcoming Garba events during an upcoming festival in order to prevent ‘love’ incidents.

“We have issued a diktat barring the entry of Muslims at Garba events at Mandvi town in Gujrat’s Kutch district,” Raghuvirsinh Jadeja, president of the group, said.

Explaining the reason for the ban, Jadeja said, “Incidents of love where Muslim boys lure and marry our Hindu girls happen at Garba. Our only aim is to protect our girls.”
