Karachi University expels student for inviting supermodel Ayyan on campus

Notification says Araib Khan damaged reputation, prestige of university; cannot take admission in any course at KU

KARACHI: The University of Karachi’s (KU) administration expelled on Monday a student who invited supermodel Ayyan for the inauguration of a business venture at the campus by the varsity's students in August this year.

Admission of Araib Khan, a student in the Department of Public Administration has been cancelled and he will not be allowed to take admission in any course of the university in future, according to a notification of the registrar of the university, Dr Moazzam Ali Khan.

“You are found guilty of damaging the reputation of the Department of Public Administration as well as the prestige of the university,” reads the notification.

He has also been banned from entering the university's premises.

The supermodel’s visit to the varsity in August created an uproar with the university administration being heavily criticised for inviting an under-trial accused.

Her visit to the university came weeks after she was released from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. The supermodel was arrested on charges of money laundering by customs’ officials from Benazir Bhutto International Airport on March 14 after $506,800 were recovered from her luggage. She spent four months behind bars before securing bail.

Another student Abdullah Rizwan, who is also believed to be involved in organising the event, has also been barred from entering the varsity’s premises, as well as from taking admission in any programme at the KU.

However, denying university claims Araib told The Express Tribune he has not received any notification or official statement in this regard.

“I have only come to know of the news of my expulsion through media channels and have not been informed by any university official nor have received a notification regarding this,” Araib said.

Umair | 9 years ago | Reply There are accusations on almost all political figures. Even our prime minister and other parliamentarians. What if it was Dr.Ishrat ul Ibad ? Or Bollywood star Salman Khan? In that case Mr.Registrar would be capturing pictures with those public figures!!!

They shouldn't have because 1 - any guest in any institute does not enter without the permission of administration and the teacher whose relevant to the event. They shouldnt have permitted it then. Now blaming it all on the student is just a pathetic attempt to show that they are bot respnsible for this. 2. The student couldn't sneak her in without her being noticed by admin and amy other officials. So, what now did they wale up only after media bashing them with questions for why they invited her? Why didn't they do anything then why now? Lastly, the student claims he doesn't know of his expulsion so what are these guys playing at? Isn't the student expelled n the university is just pulling a stunt?

However, this blow to the university wasn't possible with out the support of management and teaching staff. Therefore, the committee should look into the matter once again and identify + dismiss all those who have either supported this event or concealed information about and didn't gave first hand information to the management or the concerned who are responsible to maintain the security of the university. She, Ayaan is has become known figure for all Pakistanis after her arrest in money laundering case. Therefore, her arrival/appearance in university must have come into knowledge of every one immediately. Despite that, her successful arrival in the university, conduct the ceremony for several hours and delivering speech rises so many question upon management? Any one from university management would like to prove their innocence????

illpopo | 9 years ago | Reply @Hassan: Totally agree with you, the persons appreciating and advocating the administration department are unaware of standard operating procedures of any organization. it seems that there was no prior approval procedure for invitation of guests and the guest is even allowed to give away a speech! It is absolute blunder on part of administration.

Lets face it, would you want to listen to a boring nasty politician or her...whatever happened to freedom of speech? Was she actually convicted of anything? Bad move by the university.

Could you ever organize an event and invite a guest , on your own as a student? Even if these students did invite the model on their own, which is hard to believe, why they are being expelled? It is at best a lapse in judgement and not a moral or grave error/crime.

Azi | 9 years ago | Reply Think admission cancellation is a little harsh, a warning could have sufficed. Stealing future of a student who could very well have been a next big figure all due to a damage in reputation is punishment too hard. However, student need to be aware not to go their way screwing themselves up so much that no one can help them recover from their blunders. But students do make mistakes which is why we have a learning process. This all is coming from a former student who made very big mistakes in life but redeemed self.

The decision in my aspect is not right as this punishment will altogether finish their education and career. People are attracted towards popular faces either negative or positive but this is administration's duty to keep a check on them.

I think if a student can not differentiate whats right and wrong he is simply not benefiting from education provided to him by his teachers in first place. I think inviting a criminal as a guest using university premises and resources should be a "life in jail" punishment because you are simply saying what Ayyan did is not a crime and there are good chances you will commit a same crime when you (hopefully) grow up.

It is their failure first due to absence of policies and procedures that follow a certain process of approvals before any such guest is hosted in the university. If someone aroced it, they are responsible. Students are always excited by popularity, whether for right or wrong reasons. They should be been punished but depriving them from education altogether is too much.
