RAWALPINDI:

More than 8,000 armed policemen will be deployed in the Rawalpindi Division to maintain peace during Muharram.

Army troops, rangers and the Punjab Constabulary will also be deployed, according to a police spokesperson.

Under the security plan, no one will be allowed to stand on rooftops of commercial and residential buildings situated along the routes of mourning processions, or carry weapons.

City police have completed arrangements to maintain peace during Muharram, with 8,000 armed policemen, volunteers, elite force and lady police giving security cover to processions.

Special checking of procession routes will be completed after clearance by the bomb disposal squad.

There will also be aerial surveillance of mourning processions to ensure security.

CCTV cameras and walkthrough gates will be installed to provide additional security to the mourners.

CPO Israr Ahmed Abbasi has organised various meetings with ulema, traders and district peace committee members.

The CPO said security of the city had been further tightened.

The main mourning procession at Ashura will start from Colonel Maqbool Imambargah, and will culminate at Imambargah Qadeemi after passing through its designated route.

The Qadeemi Imambargah will be the central point where all processions will gather from different localities of the city.
