Affirmative action: Special education project initiated

LAHORE: Special Education Minister Asif Saeed Manhais said on Wednesday that the department had initiated a new project for children suffering from minor disabilities. He said the Punjab Inclusive Education Project had been initiated to identify and mainstream such children by affording them access to quality education without any discrimination. Manhais said a pilot of the project had been started in Bahawalpur and Muzaffargarh. He said it would conclude on June 30, 2016. Manhais said the project focused on harnessing the potential of out-of-school children with mild disabilities, screening and placing them in right schools, provision of assistive devices and regular monitoring, training and retention of teachers to enable them to accommodate such children.
