Food quality: Animal slaughter law in offing

Fines would be imposed on violators

The government has decided to amend the Punjab Animals Slaughter Control Act.


Sale, storage and transport of diseased or prohibited animals has been made punishable by four to eight years imprisonment. Fines would be imposed on violators.

The draft states that a female sheep or goat below the age of one year and six months; a male sheep or goat below the age of three months; a calf below the age of four months; a female sheep or goat of the age exceeding a year and six months but not exceeding four years, which is pregnant or fit for breeding; a female animal, other than sheep or goat below three years of age cannot be slaughtered under law.
