PESHAWAR: The new Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KPCCI) President, Zulfiqar Ali Khan, has taken charge of his duties at the general body meeting on Wednesday. Zulfiqar Ali was elected as the unopposed president for 2015-16.

The meeting was attended by hundreds of businessmen and small traders from across the province. Progress made during the last year were discussed and reviewed.

Fawad Ishaq, the outgoing president, lauded the work of Zulfiqar Ali at the meeting. He said the new president managed to get a five-year package of relief in income tax for traders from the federal government. “In fact, the federal government has also promised and allocated funds for the construction of a dry port and a modern expo-centre in Peshawar that will not only boost business activity in the province, but also facilitate trade with Afghanistan and Central Asian countries,” Ishaq said.

Zulfiqar Ali added the federal government also promised to set up a modern customs station and terminal at the Torkham Border check post to facilitate trade with Afghanistan. “Bank of Khyber has also promised to set up its branch at Torkham,” he added.

He also said he worked tirelessly to get a relief in tariffs on the exports to Afghanistan and restored the trade transaction of perishable items in the Pakistani Rupee. “The federal government has waived loans worth Rs1 million of all those traders who were affected by terrorist activities,” he added.
