PESHAWAR:

For the first time in their careers, teachers across the province felt appreciated by the government.

Many of them thanked the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led government for awarding them cash prizes for outstanding performances earlier this month. Authorities appreciated teachers’ efforts based on merit and awarded them cash prizes of up to Rs54 million, a press release issued by PTI said.

There are plans to double that amount in the current fiscal year, it read.

Hurdle race

The press release added that raised boundary walls, barbed wire, and surveillance cameras are some features one sees in many schools in K-P. “They instil doubt and fear in the minds of everyone in the premises, including the teachers.” it added. The ruling party stated that these teachers, who felt largely underappreciated, walked several miles to reach schools in geographically inaccessible areas. “These are only some of the trials that teaching in K-P entails.”

However, not only do K-P’s teachers stand up to the threat of militants, but perform their best to reduce the fears of the now mentally and physically scarred students, the provincial government added in the presser. It said they are not only teaching under the most challenging of conditions, but doing it with determination. “The board examination result speaks for itself. “However, their work often would go unappreciated,” the presser stated. The PTI members believe  the trend was changing through the party’s policies.

Voice of teachers

The press release quoted Anwar Sultana, headmistress for Government Girls Centennial Model School Peshawar, as saying, “In my 27-year-long career, there has never been any acknowledgement or appreciation; not even a letter from any government. However, PTI has not just given us cash prizes, but this is the first time in our lives that we received acknowledgement of our efforts.”

She said the government had taken initiatives that were close to their hearts as educationists. These included recruiting teachers on merit, providing basic facilities, developing the capacity of teachers and depoliticising the teaching profession. Sultana thanked the Minister for Education Muhammad Atif Khan for his efforts in changing the educational landscape in K-P and honouring the contributions of teachers.

A total of 960 principals, teachers and senior teachers were given cash prizes in a ceremony held at Government Shaheed Hasnain Sharif Higher Secondary School No1 in Peshawar on September 11, 2015. The awards were based on the Independent Monitoring Unit’s reports; Rs100,000 were awarded to outstanding head teacher/principal and Rs.50,000 for each performing teacher.

The performance was based on the results of 9th and 10th graders in board examinations. Only those schools were selected that achieved a 100% result this year.

Among the 840 male and female teachers who received awards, Naheed Akhtar, senior secondary teacher for science at Government Girls Centennial Model School, said, “It’s not about the money. Sure, money makes us happy but it’s the way we were treated for the first time, with respect and honour, and how it elevated our status in the eyes of our families and community members.” She said, “We feel proud and grateful to our government for this honour.”

Salute to the government of KPK. I want to advise ANP, PPP and PMLN to please close your party offices in KPK as I am 100% sure you wont get a chance to get elected from KPK for the next 10-20 years.Recommend

This will motivate teachers to work harder for their students to get better results instead of pushing them for private tuitions!
As they say money is not always a motivator, sense of achievement when your student do better is priceless and acknowledgement by Government is very good gesture! Recommend

Government school teachers (Primary, middle, high) are in huge numbers. They have strong influence on students and community, particularly in rural areas. In fact KPK government has bribed them with incentives and cash rewards to get support in LB Polls, which worked for them. This money should have been spent on teachers capacity building to benefit students. Unfortunately, PTI is also playing the same tactics to increase vote bank as other parties do. Anyone, who does not agree with my comments is welcomed to visit schools across the KPK, including my village to see reality on ground Recommend

The Only Good News from KPK we heard/read since last 28 months. The province is miserably governed by PTI leaders doing nothing but only blaming, bashing and calling for resignations of others. Any Way if it is so then best of luck but I doubt the report as in our area the situation of government school going worst from worse day by day. Teachers belonging to the Ruling parties of JI and PTI in Dir Lower often wonder in education office for taking duties in exams to make money and gifts from the students instead of teaching in their schools.

Still waiting for the Only Good News from Punjab since last 6 years. The province is miserably governed by PMLN leaders doing nothing but only shooting, bashing and calling Gullu police for revenge. Try to appreciate the efforts of PTI whole heatedly and try not to become a ‘patwari’.Recommend

Respect and appreciation for teachers is a must, and so is their training and merit based appointments and promotions. It is very encouraging to read such news. If PTI is able to deliver in 1) Education 2) Health and 3) Police; it has a bright future. Recommend

It should be clear to every one that education of the future generations is the utmost important factor in any province or any country. Investment in education pays off in the long run because earning capacity of the educated ones will be higher than those with no formal education. Teaching profession in any sector of the education, (primary or university) should be appreciated and it is heart warming to read that KP government realizes the importance of teachers and education. Kudos to the teachers who worked hard to achieve distinction among the teaching community. Congratulations to all the teachers for their efforts to look after our children.Recommend

This is happening in Punjab since last 7 years where teachers are awarded not only with cash prizes but foreign tours are also arranged by government. Top position holders Students from Punjab and from other provinces are sent to foreign tour where all they go foreign universities to check their method of teachings.

All top position holders students are awarded with Laptops and their teachers are also awarded with Laptops.Recommend

Ask me this question after PTI had ruled KPK for 15 years and had taken 3rd term in Federal government. You trying to compare a 2 year old elected party with a 15 year old elected party. Have some grace, have some ethics, have some shame.Recommend
