Blingin’ up her fashion business
Designer Shehla Chatoor on earning spurs across the border as Amy Jackson dons her designs .
KARACHI:
The local fashion spectacle is credited with producing a string of designers, who have not only been gaining ground in Pakistan but also across the border. Shehla Chatoor seems to have hit home in the glittering world of Bollywood, as rising star Amy Jackson recently wore her design to a promotional event for her upcoming film, the Akshay Kumar-starrer Singh Is Bliing. The Express Tribune catches up with the woman of the hour to explore what the feat means to her.
Chatoor shared how ecstatic she was when offered the opportunity to dress Jackson. After she shared options with her, Jackson picked and paired pieces from two different collections of the label. “We gave a few options to [Jackson] to decide from and she finalised our ‘Samsara’ studded jacket with a ‘Misaki’ crop top.”
Dressed in Chatoor’s designs, Jackson made her way to popular show Comedy Nights with Kapil. “We managed to send the dress in time,” added Chatoor, who was overwhelmed when Jackson titled a photograph of herself in the outfit, “Can’t get enough of this.”

Thrilled at being given such an opportunity, Chatoor shared, “I was very excited and loved the way she [Amy] carried it.” She said it was a pleasure to be approached by Jackson for such an endeavour, especially when there are countless international as well as Indian designers buzzing in the fashion market.
“I’m grateful to our celebrities for loving my red carpet looks and always giving me love and respect, but more importantly, it feels special to be recognised across the border,” the designer stated. Be it dressing up for a fashion week or an awards night, a host of celebrities, such as Ayesha Omar, have recently been donning Chatoor’s designs.
The designer lauded the asserting presence of social media today, marking it as the reason behind making her interaction with Bollywood celebrities possible. “I’ve been approached to dress Indian celebrities in the past as well, but timings and logistics came in the way,” she shared. “This time around, however, her [Jackson’s] stylist, who was following my Instagram account, dropped an email and we exchanged different styles, finalising a couple of options.”

On whether Chatoor would grab onto any other offer for Bollywood projects, she said, “I’ll continue to do it for as long as I feel it gels with my brand image.” Jackson’s role in the Prabhu Deva film, Singh is Bliing, involves performing action stunts alongside Akshay Kumar.
The model-turned-actor, who will be seen in a sporty avatar, is seen horse-riding in the film’s trailer, something she has a penchant for and has been doing since years. Singh Is Bliing, which also starts Lara Dutta and Kay Kay Menon, is slated to hit theatres on October 2.
