Workers at an Edhi mortuary in Karachi received quite the shock on Monday when a pregnant woman who had been declared dead and was being prepared for burial suddenly came back to life.

“When she was being given ghusal, Manzoora Bibi, 55, suddenly got up and started reciting the Kalma. Everyone was shocked,” Edhi Foundation’s spokesperson Anwar Kazmi told The Express Tribune.

“Manzoora Bibi was pregnant and was brought to the mortuary by her husband, Bashir, a worker at a poultry farm,” Kazmi added.

The 55-year-old belonging to Dumba Goth near Karachi’s Super Highway was brought to the foundation for performance of final rites and burial.

“We can’t ascertain why the woman, around 55-years-old was declared dead,” he added.

According to Kazmi, the woman must have fainted and was believed to be dead by the family. “The family thought that the woman was dead and without confirming it with a doctor, brought her straight to the morgue,” the spokesperson further said.

Half an hour later, the woman was sent back with her family from the Edhi morgue at Sohrab Goth.
