A provincial education department official announced on Friday that board examinations for eighth grade students will be resumed this year. “Board exams for 8th class, which remained suspended for over a decade, will be resumed from this year,” said Additional Secretary Asfandyar Kakar.

“From now on promotion of District Education Officers (DEOs) will be made on performance assessment rather than seniority or political backing.” He was speaking at a seminar titled “Role of Literacy in Sustainable development: In Balochistan’s perspective” was organized by and held in Balochi Academy.

Dozens of students, social activists, journalists and social development persons attended the seminar.

At the end of the seminar, a set of recommendations was drafted that would be sent to government departments and social organizations working on education. These are to be used as policy guidelines on how to improve literacy rate.
