KARACHI: The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has decided to stay away from the conflict between the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and Hockey India (HI) over the Champions Trophy incident last year.

FIH CEO Kelly Fairweather said that the two boards have to sort out the matter themselves as the FIH does not intend to “sit between them.”

It all started with HI President Narender Batra once again demanding an apology from Pakistan for some of the national players’ unruly behaviour last year.

However, PHF secretary Shahbaz Ahmed Sr shot down the demand, saying that an apology had already been issued by the then Pakistan coach Shahnaz Sheikh right after the incident.

Shahbaz then asked the FIH and the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) to take action against Batra’s statement.

“Batra spoke of his grievances to the media but did not send anything in writing to us,” Shahbaz told The Express Tribune. “We had already played our part and the FIH also took action by banning our players for the final, so bringing up issues that have already been resolved is of no use to anyone,” he said.

Fairweather seconded Shahbaz saying, “The incident, as far as the FIH is concerned, is in the past. We took what we believe was the appropriate action. We are not going to comment any further because, as I said, it is a discussion between the two federations and they should sort it out for the betterment of hockey.”
