SARATOGA, CA, US: I am surprised by how many people are criticising Veena Malik. We still live in a culture that demands that Ms Malik first obtain permission from men to appear in a television show. This doesn’t make any sense and ignores the fact that she is an artist and that landing a spot on a popular TV show in a market as large as India’s should be seen as an achievement. Since coming on Bigg Boss, Ms Malik has managed to see her career experience a big boost — and in that sense this has turned out to be an excellent marketing strategy. It would be fair to say that now Veena Malik is a household name in India.
In all of this, one must also commend Ms Malik who has weathered the criticism and not backed off in doing what she has wanted to do to further her career. Had she succumbed to these pressures, she would not have been where she is today.
