A patient diagnosed with dengue fever was admitted at Saidu Teaching Hospital in Swat on Friday, bringing the number of cases up to six.

Muhammad Javaid, 35, a resident of Shahdara, was shifted to the hospital Friday morning for a fever and tested positive for dengue. However, he was said to be in stable condition.

A senior official of the hospital told The Express Tribune reports of people contracting dengue are coming from areas where there was no sign of the virus previously. He said officials from the district health department spotted the larvae at 1,246 places and eradicated them. The officials of the department then visited around 56,093 parts in the high-risk union councils where they found 128,201 spots with favourable breeding conditions for the dengue virus. Following the visit, four spray campaigns against the disease were carried out in these spots, the official said. “We don’t know why there is a surge in the spread of the disease,” he added, saying reports of dengue are coming from areas where the spray campaigns have not been conducted.
