Waste management: Recycling plant to be set up in Sahiwal

LAHORE:

The government plans to establish a solid waste recycling plant in Sahiwal. The plant will be set up this year at an estimated cost of Rs150 million.

Planning and Development Department’s Urban Unit Chief Executive Officer Nasir Javed said the segregation, treatment and disposal would recover recyclable materials and use it as feedstock for composting and refuse derived fuel (RDF).

He said the provincial government would fund the project that would be executed by the Urban Unit. After its completion, the plant will be handed over to the municipal administration that might outsource its operation and maintenance.

“The project will have zero operational cost… almost all operational and maintenance expenses will be met through recyclable materials to be retrieved from the mix municipal solid waste.”

He said the plant would help cater to solid waste of the entire city.
