ISLAMABAD:

Dr Fauzia Siddiqui called upon Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to honour his promises to secure the release of her sister Dr Aafia Siddiqui from an American prison.

Dr Aafia is serving an 86-year-sentence in a Texas jail after an American jury convicted her in 2010 on the charges of attempted murder. US officials had accused her of attempting to fire at FBI agents in Afghanistan’s Ghazni province.

Dr Fauzia said that in Islamabad she wants to refresh the memories of Premier Nawaz about the commitments he had made during his visit to her family in Karachi in September 2013.

“As the prime minister will be visiting the United States in the coming weeks, we are urging him to bring back my sister with him as he had personally promised to do so,” she told reporters in the federal capital.

“We had trusted the premier’s promises but they never materialised.”
