HYDERABAD:

Following the Supreme Court's order, the Sindh Taraqi Pasand (STP) party has called for the making of Sindhi the official language of the province.

"Sindhi, Punjabi, Balochi, Pashto and Siraiki should be given their due status in the provinces," demanded STP chairperson Dr Qadir Magsi at a press conference on Wednesday.

Article 251 of the Constitution allows the use of a provincial language. "Without prejudice to the status of the national language, a provincial assembly may, by law, prescribe measures for the teaching, promotion and use of a provincial language in addition to the national language," reads its Section (3). Magsi stressed the need of teaching Sindhi to students in all private and government schools. He argued that the continuous influx of people from other provinces to Sindh will turn native Sindhis in a minority.
