PESHAWAR:

The provincial government plans to enrol 800,000 children in schools this year, said Minister for Information Mushtaq Ghani. He was speaking at an event held at a hotel in the city to commemorate International Literacy Day and initiate the second phase of the enrolment drive.

Ghani said the provincial government has made it compulsory for students to be taught English until the third grade. “With time, we will try to encourage schools to adopt English as their medium of instruction,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, K-P Elementary and Secondary Education Additional Secretary Qaiser Alam said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led government has allocated Rs102 billion for the education sector. “This has never been done before in the history of K-P,” he said.

He added the government is planning to conduct a door-to-door drive to collect data about the number of children in K-P who do not go to school.

“The current data is vague and inconsistent,” he said. According to Alam, the provincial government is
also planning to increase stipends for girls from class six to 10. “We are plannng to increase it from Rs200 to Rs1,000,” he added.
