Syrian refugees

The people of Pakistan must also do as much as they can to help Syrian refugees

KARACHI: I would like to draw attention to the global issue of Syrian refugees. Thousands from the country have risked their lives to try their luck at a better life in Europe. Finally, now, some European nations are beginning to come to the rescue of the stranded citizens by accepting them into their countries.

Syria’s civil war is one of the worst humanitarian disasters of our time. The number of innocent civilians who are suffering is in the millions, out of which more than 11 million people have been displaced so far. According to the UN, more than half of all Syrian refugees are under the age of 18. The lack of clean water and sanitation in crowded, makeshift settlements is an urgent concern as this can exacerbate the people’s plight by giving rise to diseases. Many humanitarian organisations, such as Mercy Corps, are partnering with the UN in order to collect donations. The people of Pakistan must also do as much as they can to help Syrian refugees.
