Pakistan cricket fraternity celebrates Defence Day

Wasim Akram, Shahid Afridi, Ahmed Shehzad and others tweet to honour the war of 1965

As the nation observes the 50th Defence Day today, members of the Pakistan cricket fraternity also join in commemorating the day to pay tribute to the heroes of the 1965 war.

Shahid Afridi, the veteran batsman who has donned the Pakistan cricket jersey countless times, posted a heartfelt tweet in which he prayed for the armed forces of Pakistan.



Legendary pacer Wasim Akram also took to twitter to thank the 'true heroes' of Pakistan.

The giant of Pakistan cricket Muhammad Irfan used poetry by Iftikhar Arif to laud the efforts of soldiers of 1965.



Shoaib Malik and Wahab Riaz also posted their thanks to the armed forces.





One-day captain Azhar Ali eloquently praised the defense of Pakistan, saying, "To all those who gave their today for our tomorrow."



Ahmed Shehzad was another player who used Urdu to honour Defence Day. He wrote, "Though I did not witness it (1965 war) from my own eyes, I have been brought up on stories of that day... and with each passing year, I sense the spirit of responsibility getting stronger and the chants of 'Pakistan Zindabad' getting louder."



Pakistan's on and off wicketkeepter Kamran Akmal tweeted a picture to "pay tribute to the martyrs of the nation."

The nation's celebration of Defence Day started with a 31 gun salute in the federal capital and 21 gun salute in provincial capitals. And after Fajr prayers, special prayers were offered for the progress and prosperity of the nation.
