PESHAWAR: Over the last eight months, law and order in the city has escalated to a point of no return. Police reports present a bleak picture of the amount of crime committed during this period.

Crime diary

At least 305 cases of murder have been registered while 412 cases of attempted murder have surfaced over the past eight months.

According to police records, 354 FIRs have been registered against crimes, resulting in injuries to victims. On the other hand, 10 kidnapping for ransom cases have been registered during the same period. Furthermore, 25 cases of abduction have been reported. During the same period, another 25 kidnapping for marriage cases have come to the fore.

At least 106 cases of assault, 61 cases of burglaries and 21 cases of robbery were reported between January and August.

Road safety has also become a cause for concern as 59 fatal and 245 non-fatal road accidents have been reported over the last eight months. In addition, 62 cases of car-lifting, 16 car-snatching incidents, 86 bike-lifting and 29 bike-snatching incidents have surfaced during this period.

Now and then

Although the crime rate has alarmed residents, a police official insists there has been a sharp decline in the crime rate as compared to the previous year. Speaking to The Express Tribune, he said there has been a reduction in militancy and spike in street crimes.

“Furthermore, extortionists do not pose serious threat anymore,” he said. “The counter-terrorism department has cracked down on militants. However, anti-social elements continue to pose a threat and we will need to take steps to curb their activities.”
