This was stated in a handout issued by the information department on Thursday.
“The library was initially going to open in June,” read the statement. “However, we had to give some finishing touches to the project and decided to delay the process of handing over the library to the archives department.”
According to the document, the library is yet to be opened for the public.
“It has been constructed at the cost of Rs53 million on 7.25 kanals of land,” stated the handout.
The initiative is part of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government’s plans to establish public libraries on the district level.
On the shelves
“Books and furniture have already been purchased for the library,” stated the handout. “Books for college and university students will also be available and efforts are being made to set up a digital library in future.”
A hall which can seat 200 people has also been constructed on the premises.
Back to life
Up until a few years ago, the residents of Kohat could boast of having the historic Jinnah Library. However, after the devolution of power in 2002, the library was handed over to the district government. The structure was subsequently demolished and a commercial plaza was constructed in its place.
Books and furniture from Jinnah Library were shifted to Bacha Khan Library in Malik Saad Park.
