National T20 Championship: Eight teams battling it out for remaining two spots

12 teams will feature in the main tournament at Pindi Cricket Stadium

KARACHI: The battle for the final two spots of the Haier National T20 Championship will begin on Tuesday in the Haier Q8 T20 Cup 2015-16 at the Pindi Cricket Stadium.

A total of eight regional teams, divided into two groups, will contest in the qualifying round, which will be held from September 1 to September 5.

In group A, Quetta will face Larkana in the opening match of the tournament, followed by Lahore (Blue) playing against Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK).

In group B, Karachi (Blue) will face FATA in the last match of the first day, while Dera Murad (DM) Jamali and Bahawalpur will face off on September 2.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals, with both finalists making it to the main round.

In group A, Quetta will be led by Jalat Khan, Larkana by Zahid Mehmood, Lahore (Blue) by Adnan Akmal and AJK by Abdul Shakoor. In group B, Karachi (Blue) will be led by national T20 skipper Shahid Afridi with Sarfraz Ahmed as his deputy, FATA by Fawad Khan, DM Jamali by Taimur Ali and Bahawalpur by Kamran Hussain.

The main round which begins from September 8 will be contested by 12 teams, with the semi-finals taking place on September 14 and the final on September 15.

The 10 teams who received direct entry into the  main round courtesy of their performances last session are Sialkot, Karachi (Whites), Hyderabad, Multan and Rawalpindi in group A  and Peshawar, Faisalabad, Islamabad, Lahore (White) and Abbottabad in Group B.

“The new format has made the competition tougher,” said fast-bowler Mir Hamza of Karachi (Whites). “ We have to put even more efforts than the last time to win.”
