MULTAN: Those supplying adulterated loose milk and edibles to consumers are enemies of the society, Sahiwal Division Commissioner Azmat Mahmood told members of a divisional task force during a meeting on Sunday.

The task force, chaired by MPA Chaudhry Iftikhar Hussain Chhachhar, has been set up to check the supply of milk and edibles sold in Sahiwal.

Mahmood said a campaign has been launched against eateries, milkmen and bakeries selling adulterated food and beverages in the city. He said strict action would be taken against the owners of such establishments.

The commissioner also issued instructions for an awareness campaign in this regard. Banners carrying the Punjab Food Authority’s toll free number 0800-02345 will be displayed on them and people will be requested to call the number in case of any complaints.

The commissioner directed the task force to check every container of milk being transported from Sahiwal to Lahore every day. He appreciated the efforts of the task force and said they had played a major role in unveiling the faces of corrupt and dishonest businessmen who were endangering the lives of people.

Chhachhar said the task force had started its campaign in Sahiwal since August 1 and had collected 110 samples of food during 330 raids. He said 16 shopkeepers had been arrested, 19 FIRs had been registered and 46 food shops had been sealed. He said 632kg of adulterated items had been seized and Rs0.45 million fines had been imposed on several shopkeepers and milkmen. He said that 340 medical stores had been checked and 35 medical stores selling fake medicines and steroids had been sealed.
