"We just passed an important milestone," chief executive and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg said in a post on his Facebook page.
"On Monday (August 24), one in seven people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family."
It was the first time that a billion people used Facebook in a single day, according to Zuckerberg.
“When we talk about our financials, we use average numbers,” Zuckerberg said, adding that “but this is different. This was the first time we reached this milestone, and it's just the beginning of connecting the whole world.”
Zuckerberg also posted a video dedicated to the achievement.
“Our community stands for giving every person a voice, for promoting understanding and for including everyone in the opportunities of our modern world.”
In its earnings update last month, Facebook said monthly active users grew 13 per cent from a year ago to 1.49 billion. The number of mobile active users rose to 1.31 billion.
