People passing by Sea View beach these days would have noticed a new addition to the coastline, a tall pole, with machines constructing a platform around it.
To honour the armed forces, the Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC) is putting up a national flag at the beach, likely to be unveiled on September 6 in a special ceremony when the country celebrates Defence Day.
The vice-president of the CBC, Aziz Suharwardy, told The Express Tribune that the authorities have decided to erect a flagpole on the beach. "For the past year, our forces have been engaged in Operation Zarb-e-Azb and are eliminating terrorists. This monument will pay tribute to them," he explained.
The flag, along with its flag post, will be between 130 and 140 feet high and, according to the authorities, Sea View will be the only beach to host a Pakistani flag. Suharwardy said that the plan has the approval of the Corps Commander.
To withstand the weather conditions, both the flag and the pole are especially being made for the purpose of being near the beach. "The flag will be made of special material to overcome the wind force and sea conditions. Similarly, the pole will also be different from the usual ones," he explained.
According to Suharwardy, the beach has been selected as it is a popular spot, not only for the thousands of Karachiites that visit it but also for people visiting from other cities. The CBC has recently introduced beach cleaning machines and put up 10 watch towers to facilitate the people coming to Sea View beach, Suharwardy pointed out.
