Undemocratic forces

These political dynasties are much more dangerous as they devalue and malign the institution of democracy

KARACHI: Pakistan’s English-language media in general has been a vocal supporter of democratic values in the country. It is generally thought to be the voice of the educated people, and hence its support for democracy is heartening. However, I fail to understand why it does not criticise undemocratic forces which wear the cloak of democracy, and are very dangerous to the institution. These forces, which often have no use for democracy other than using it as a slogan, have demoralised the public and have weakened their belief and trust in the democratic system.

A military takeover is a clear violation of democratic values and hence leaves no confusion as to what is right. However, these political dynasties are much more dangerous as they devalue and malign the institution of democracy. Scions of political leaders are not shamed at having no political qualifications other than a surname, to hold extremely important party and government positions — and sadly, the media rarely questions them the way it might question a military takeover. These people should be questioned, and not given any unearned respect.
