Parachinar used to be called ‘a paradise on Earth’. Despite its natural beauty and strategic importance, Parachinar is presently in a dire state due to sectarian violence initially instigated by the negative policies of former president Ziaul Haq. The residents of Parachinar, predominantly Shia, have been the target of jihadi entities and this has been the primary cause of sectarian clashes there. This violence has transformed the once beautiful land into ruins, completely destroying infrastructure. The main road connecting Peshawar to Parachinar has been blocked by sectarian extremists who have been brutally killing travellers to and from Parachinar.

Local people have been forced to travel through dangerous routes via Afghanistan and back into Peshawar just to purchase daily rations and essential items. Today, even that route has been closed, effectively cutting them off from the rest of Pakistan. This has caused local merchants to raise prices of staple foods such as flour, ghee, sugar and rice up to six times. There is also a tremendous shortage of basic medical supplies and essential life-saving drugs in Parachinar, in addition to a scarcity of proper medical facilities and staff in the area. The youth of Parachinar are worse off since the lack of even basic education has meant that most schools in the area have remained closed for a long time. In the past few decades, the Shias of Kurram Agency have suffered greatly. This started when General Zia relocated the local Kurram militia from Parachinar to other agencies, upsetting the century-old tradition of keeping a local officer in the militia’s hierarchy or as a political administrator.

When the Taliban took over in Afghanistan, the situation got much worse for Kurram agency. And, after their defeat in 2001, a large number of Taliban, along with al Qaeda members, fled to the bordering tribal areas in Pakistan, settling in regions in upper Kurram dominated by Shia tribes. This resettlement became a flashpoint and the oppression of the locals multiplied when, five years ago, the Taliban blockaded the only road that connects Parachinar with Thal — the first town in the settled area. This affected trade and downgraded the social life of the people, strangulating their livelihood. Consequently, they found it difficult to safeguard their families and find jobs, decent food and sometimes even basic medicines.

The situation of Parachinar is only getting worse. The people of Parachinar still remember, with deep affection, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed as they focused on the betterment of this desperately poor and deprived area in order to strengthen its resources by the rehabilitation of its schools, colleges, hospitals and medical facilities. Shaheed Benazir Bhutto also directed PIA to have a flight connecting Parachinar and Peshawar on a weekly basis at an affordable fare. This stopped during former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s tenure and needs to be reinstated urgently. Currently, only a few wealthy residents of Parachinar are able to afford a flight to Peshawar through a private plane service and it charges a high fare. It is time for us to step forward to rescue the people of Parachinar.

Taliban under the leadership of the pious Mullah Umer, massacred 4000 shias of Mazar Sharif in 1997; he didnt even spare the 9 Iranian diplomats. And they are supposed to be the good taliban! God help the poor tribals of Parachinar.Recommend

The Toori tribe of Parachinar have been living through a terrible nightmare. Taliban intercept ordinary tribesmen travelling of the road and behead them for the ‘crime’ of being born to a different sect.

Shame on the Pakistani people for sitting by the last few years while our brethren have endured these barbaric acts. Ms Ispahani is right, we must pool our efforts and save the innocent residents of Kurram Agency from the Taliban monsters. Recommend

Certainly it must be get rid the whole area from the menace of taliban and likewise groups. But the question is, where are our public servants and why they don’t take it serious. It replies that our strong Army couldn’t dare to clear the roads which local talibans have taken under their control. But the main reason which we observed is there are the people who always favoring taliban along with their inhumane and henious deeds in the govt.so it is our govt who can only interfere and provide relief to the victims of terrorism in Parachinar.Recommend

You are the ruling party and who are you blaming for Kurrmamites plight. Who are you complaining to? When will PPP stop hiding in B’s duppata and come up with solutions?

It is certainly a great piece of writing by the author but the only think i would add is that, the author has been very careful about the digits of the sternness. Perhaps the situtation is much worst than the author pictures it. But yet it is eye-opening for those who still beleive that Parachinar is in Pakistan. A big NO, Parachinar is not in Pakistan anymore. I would add that the cost of an air ticket from Peshawar to Parachinar (these days, only if one finds it) is more than it costs from Peshawar to UAE or Saudi Arabia or certain other countries. Where is our Government by the way?Recommend

You are part of the government. Tell us when you are going to ask your own government what to do about Parachinar? Besides, alot of Local residents are also pin-pointing towards the conspiracy theories and involvement of state agencies in this issue. Some people are associating it with the “Strategic Depth” concept!!!! Please inform the readers about the true situation and provide us clear information. Tell us how many steps have been taken by the Federal Government or its representative (Governor KPK)? And of-course what steps have been taken by the ANP Government- apart from corruption?????????Recommend

The writer has written something great but i only add one sentence which will solve all the issues. I think its totally game of government , if government want to unblock the road and solve all the problems, they can do it within very short time.

The second thing is about the supporting leader of Taliban and member of NA (Munir Orkzia), he has openly said that there are no more Taliban in lower kurrum. If there are no more Taliban then who has blocked the road and who are killing the poor peoples of parachinnar in the road? If members of NA better discuss the issue in assembly and tell to Munir Orkazia about the presence of Taliban in lower kurrum and take an better operation step then i think the problems will be sloved.. Thank you for at least bringing this issue in the media, though it deserves a lot from our media who find it worthed to discuss about Veena Malik than to highlight the massacre (I MEAN IT, ‘MASSACARE’) happening in the Kurram Agency. Although the picture portrayed by Ms Ispahani is factual but could be misinterpreted. Being a shia myself, I know what terrible life turi shias are facing over there, nonetheless I would also like to mention that the local bangash (sunni) tribe is also not even spared from the brutality of Talibans. Without going too much in detail I just want to give a brief background of what has happened over there. These two tribes have been living for many years with peace. Taliban with their strategic objectives tried to get control of Kurram Agency along with the neighbouring agencies. Initially they provoked bangash ppl to fight againts turi’s. Bangash’s refused as it was unthinkable for them to fight with those with whom they had been living for hundred of years. Bangash’s tried to aligned themselves to turi’s to kick out Taliban’s from the region. Unfortunately, taliban already penetrated into bangash and with the support of their loyals inside, did two things 1)Not letting any formation of any coalition between two tribes through violent means like spoiling any Jirga formation through bomb blast etc 2) Provoking young bangash against Shia because of difference of religious practice and belives. A division occured amongst the bangash and those who refused to fight againts the turi shias were become the target of brutality of taliban, side by side wit turi Shias. End result – there is less support for turi shias now amongst the bangash sunni because of the fear-factor of Taliban

The main reason for giving this background was to include the missing picture in the above article and also to not let anybody (even my own shias fellows) to play Shia card against Sunnis, even though recognizing the fact that local sunnis are now fighting along with Taliban’s against the shias and is condemnable and not justified at all.

On Ms. Ispahani’s little-appreciated but not-sufficient effort, it is irony that that those who are in-charge of governance are themselves crying about their epic failures of responsibilities. Nawaz Shariff is no longer in power now madam. Stop playing Bhutto card and get on to work. The COC of Pakistan army is one phone call away from you.Recommend

Also Friday, police said nine people were killed by mortar rounds fired by suspected Sunni extremists in two attacks in the northwest. The presumed targets in Hangu district and the nearby tribal area of Kurram were Shiite Muslims, said Hangu police chief Abdur Rasheed.

In Hangu, three mortars missed a Shiite mosque, hitting a house, killing six and wounding eight. In Kurram, a mortar hit a house, killing three, he said.

Anti-Shiite militants in Pakistan predate al-Qaida and the Taliban, which are also Sunni. These days, the groups are firmly allied and have overlapping memberships. They generally believe it is acceptable, even meritorious, to kill Pakistan’s minority Shiites because they consider them heretics. Recommend

The menace of Taliban and jehadi outfits will not go away simply because they have very powerful supporters. There is a good possibility that these violent groups might take over large swathe of the nation. Until and unless their sources of funding and ideological support by corrupt puppet Arab regimes are not stopped, there is not really much hope. There are even indications that the puppet Arab regimes are just doing these things on the order of a super power in order to keep Pakistan down favoring India. While Pakistani citizens are being killed and nation’s scientific progress is suffering at the hand of these 7th century thugs, India is talking of becoming a technological superpower. We have to go back into history and see who these taleban were. Taliban were created by CIA to fight Russians and wahabis were a bunch of thugs who were hired by British crown to break down the last Caliphate thanks to Col TE Lawrence. They have always been the agents working for the interests of white people. There are literally tonnes of documentaries available on youtube elaborating the relationship between CIA and Taliban and Alqaeda. Such as Zero: and investigation into 9/11. Unless people are not informed of true identities of these monsters, they might still remain trapped in the illusion of good pious muslims which justifies the heinous crimes of these outfits. The poisonous tree which had been planted by Ziaul-Haq in 1980’s when he imported this treacherous ideology from Saudi Arabia in order to benefit Americans strategically has come of age today. The tree that Musharraf has planted is still growing. This tree is going to be even more poisonous. Lets see what will be its fruits. Recommend

The author by bringing to light the plight of the Prachinar people has done an excellent job. Some bloggers have unfairly blamed her for not doing enough being a ruling party MP. I am afraid that the ruling party too is helpless since the country’s defence and foreign policies are dictated by the powerful Army who consider Afghan Taleban and Panjab terror groups as their strategic assets and tools of jihad in Kashmir. They are not planning to start any operations against them despite intense pressure from the Americans and even killing of their own countrymen, who are dying in thousands and whom they are duty bound to protect. There is bound to be more bloodshed and chaos in Pakistan unless this self-destructive policy of supporting terrorists organisations is totally shunned by the Pak Army. May God help Pakistan. For Mr. Khan & those who want to the know the facts facts
There was no eviction of sunnis but a very strong base of Sepahe Sahaba and Lashkare Jahngvi was established in a mosque exactly as that of Lal Masjid. This was a transit point for AQ training camps in Afghanistan. Riaz Basra like notorious terrorists were hiding there. They were also trying to attack NATO installations in Afghanistan using this route and also using Turis land. For them the best slogan was sectarian and aniti shia. With the sympathy of begoted and so called jehadi elements in establishment lot of property belonging to town committee parachinar was alloted or rented to such jehadis. Most of them were Afghan refugies. They were challenging the interest of local Shia Turis. Turis are in majority so they succeeded to destroy this SSP base and it took sectarian touch and very few neutral sunnis living in Parachinar also left the city. Not only Sunni lot of Shia not happy with the situation left the city and setteled in other parts. Now the Haqani group is involved whick proved this statement.
The claim that bonafied residents were evicted is also just a slogen to divert attention or gain sympathy. All those were living in city in rented or alloted quarters of town committee so this claim is baseless. There were lot of videos fabricated. This is very old blame and I thing people know reallity.
Now this is Government job to establish a neutral powerfull commission to investigate the case from the begining and if really sunnis or shia are suffered must be compensated.Recommend

I would also comment on Mr Khan point of view. I request you to please understand the root cause of Parachinar issue. There is no point to discuss that Shia misplaced the sunnis of the areas. No its totally wrong. Sunnis are responsible of their own of such situations. Because they allowed the terrorists like Riaz Basra and others to locate in Parachinar. When Shia realized the worsen situation they stand against these terrorists. Shia made it clear that no taliban are allowed in the area. Shias were trying to escape the Taliban from the area with the help of Government but unfortunately establishment provide full support to them. After all they blasted in Parachinar Bazar in the daylight and thus fight began. Shia do not want to fight against Sunnis because they spent decades together with them but unfortunately the local Sunnis supported the terrorists.
As Hazrat Ali (A.S) said that “Friend of Enemy is considered as Enemy”. Shia follow the saying of Hazrat Ali (A.S) and fight against these terrorists. As a result the terrorists are badly defeated and escaped form the beautiful land of Parachinar along with the local Sunnis.
That is the whole story. It is always good habit to understand the reality behind each event rather to consider the wrong people as innocent. Allah almighty don’t like the lie.
May Allah guide us on the right path and eradicate the sectarian prejudice exist in our hearts.
I appreciate the efforts of Ms Farahnaz for her courage to write on this issue.Recommend
