Israel orders demolition of mosque in East Jerusalem

Israeli officials from the town of Silwan in East Jerusalem have delivered an order for the demolition of al-Qaaqaa mosque along with a house and a studio apartment.
The mosque which is situated in the Ein al-Luza area of Silwan was built over three years ago over an area of 110 square meters and serves 5,000 worshippers. Majdi al-Abbasi, from the Wadi Hilweh Information Center in Silwan, confirmed that the demolition order was delivered on Friday reports Ma’an.

Al-Abbasi revealed that the studio apartment that has been ordered to be demolished was built twelve years ago and the home being demolished houses six people.
Silwan is one of the several neighbourhoods in East Jerusalem that is dealing with an influx of Israeli settlers at the expense of the demolition of Palestinian homes as well as eviction from their houses.
Earlier this week the Israeli court ordered to demolish a football field and its facilities in Silwan, which include the demolition of a 0.4 acre sports field as well as an adjacent warehouse and animal shed.

Nearly 370 demolitions of Palestinian homes have been carried out by the Israeli authorities in the occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank in 2015 alone, displacing nearly 432 residents according to reports by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Since the occupation of East Jerusalem in 1967, a move not recognised by the international community, Palestinians have constantly been neglected. Thousands are at risk of losing their homes as Israel continues to foster policies which aim to obtain a Jewish majority in East Jerusalem.
