Scores of residents of Asim Town staged a protest demonstration on Saturday against Batala Colony police for failing to arrest a man involved in abduction and murder. The protesters gathered at Kutchery Chowk. They were carrying banners and placards and blocked it for traffic. Umar Farooq, one of the protesters, told newsmen that his nephew Sheharyar had returned from the United Kingdom to visit his relatives in 2014. He said he had been abducted and later killed.
“We moved a complaint at Batala Colony police and they registered an FIR and arrested some suspects,” he said. However, the suspects were released later. “One of the suspect’s brother is a policeman and he used his influence to free him,” Farooq said.
He said the investigation officer had dismissed the evidence against the suspects.
“Now, they are urging us to withdraw the complaint,” he said. The protesters chanted slogans against police and demanded arrest of the suspects.
The Batala Colony DSP met the protesters and assured them that the suspects would be arrested soon. The protesters dispersed on his assurance.
