Bugti called US embassy at the time of arrest

US embassy confirms Shahzain Bugti had contacted US official, shutter-down strike in Balochistan.

QUETTA: The US embassy in Islamabad on Friday confirmed that the provincial chief of Jahmoori Watan Party (JWP) Shahzain Bugti had communicated with them at the time of his arrest two days ago.

Talking to Express News, US embassy spokesman Alberto Rodrix said that Shahzain had contacted an official in the American embassy.

Rodrix said that Bugti had discussed his arrest with the official. The spokesman said said that the US respects Pakistani law and that Bugti’s arrest is Pakistan's internal matter.

Shahzain Bugti, the grandson of late Nawab Akbar Bugti, was arrested by paramilitary troops on Wednesday when they found a huge quantity of arms and ammunitions from vehicles in his convoy during a snap check at the Buleli check-post on the outskirts of Quetta.

Shutter-down strike

The JWP called for a shutter-down strike in Balochistan today to protest the the arrest of Shahzain Bugti.

Various parts of Balochistan observed the strike.

In Quetta, business centres remained closed and few vehicles ventured on to the city’s roads. Tight security measures were in place to avoid any untoward incident, with political parties and trade organizations also supporting the strike.

JWP activists forcefully closed shops and resorted to aerial firing in a few areas in Quetta, with police confiscating their firearms.

Om | 13 years ago | Reply Shazain had no business to call US embassy... Shazain be a good Pakistani citizen. Don't fall into the traps of foreign agents. It will lead you no where man. Lay down your arms. Surrender. You will be punished for possessing weapons and inciting people against the state. But if you mend your ways the President will pardon you and you can lead a normal life just like any other citizen of Pakistan. But if you are pawn in the hands of foreign agents then you will loose every thing. You had 63 years, what did you do for he poor people of Balochistan except giving them poverty and displacement. You have enjoyed enough it is now the chance of poor Balochs to enjoy.

His grandfather shot died just because he had blown pipelines many times.. In Balochistan, these tribal leaders walk on Pakistan flag.. they use flag as carpet.. they want to divide Balochistan from Pakistan.. A baloch tribe leader(name forgot) has always been welcomed by Indian govt in their county.. He met Indian govt officials many times to give hurts to Pakistan.. Indian officials have accepted this reality and they had said that they welcome him in their country(India..)

Mohsin Ahmed Patel | 13 years ago | Reply Nawab Bugti and his family receives millions of Rupees in royalty for gas. They have been receiving it from the time gas was found in Sui. I wonder how much of this money they have invested for education and welfare on their tribe over which they lord. I wonder why people never ask these nawabs? Baluchistan is suffering because the people who present themselves as leaders of people actually use them.

Ali Butt | 13 years ago | Reply I strongly believe that shahzein bugti was crossed by the Americans. This way US willll force him to surrender to their demands ... quite an ol' classic strategy. That arms cache must have been given to Bugti through some, whatever CIA/Russian/RAW agents and US informed the pakistani agencies from the backdoor frequencies.

Mulla Toofhan | 13 years ago | Reply The Bugti's need to understand that they have to live under law of the Land, Powerful and Mighty as they maybe dosent give them the right to break the law and if you did you should face the consequences. Why did you call the US embassy ? Did they give you instruction to bring the Arms or did you think you can get a Jail free Card from them. If you need to make a point then go through the right channel, The Law enforcing agencies and courts in Pakistan are there for a reason. The attitudes of Zamendar, Wadaras, and Land lords needs to be checked. "No more free rides for these people"

Raja Javed | 13 years ago | Reply i'm punjabi by origin but my empathy lies among our weak balochs brothers at this time of misery.......hasn't the army done enough damage to the people of balochistan........especially when it comes to the bugti tribe.....first assassinating nawab bugti, then oppressing the locals for years and now mistreating his grandson......i don’t feel sorry anymore for army or fc personnel when they get attacked.......its something they bring upon themselves……equally deserving considering the baloch sufferings.

Nazir Habib | 13 years ago | Reply Firstly, how did he get to call the US embassy? Secondly, what do the Pakistanis consider the US? A wake up call, a catchphrase to freedom or a password to safety? This is terrible, abominable and disgusting. The people of Pakistan have a right to living their lives within the confines of defined law. No problem on that. But what hurts me is that why call a foreign embassy? The sooner the USA leaves the region-------better for all. Salams and best wishes.
