The Sports, Tourism, Culture, Archaeology, Museums and Youth Affairs department plans to establish 47 grounds on an urgent basis to promote sports activities across the province.
The department’s secretary, Azam Khan, told The Express Tribune the Directorate General of Sports would also sign an MoU with the elementary and secondary education department to acquire and develop playgrounds in schools and colleges.
He said after the MoU was signed, playgrounds at various educational institutes would also be made available at a subsidised fee.
“The directorate purchased sports gear worth Rs21.5 million and transferred the equipment to the respective district sports officers and deputy commissioners for onward distribution,” Azam added. According to the secretary, the quality of sports equipment was checked by a committee headed by squash legend Qamar Zaman.
“This was the first time sportsmen in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa had outdone Punjab and other provinces at national level games,”
he said.
