Kasur tragedy

It is indeed unfortunate that the sexual abuse of children is quite prevalent in our depraved society

RAWALPINDI: A mega child abuse scandal going back several years surfaced recently in Kasur, with there being reports of more than 280 boys and girls being sexually molested and abused and then threatened and blackmailed. This is indeed a horrendous state of affairs. These criminals not only sexually abused these children, but also captured indecent acts on video, which were then used to extort large sums of money from the victims’ families.

The question arises, how can the police of the area not be aware of this incident? This clearly indicates that these ugly acts were taking place with the collusion of the police. Otherwise, it is extremely difficult to believe that this drama had been enacted for more than a decade under the nose of the local administration and police, with none of them having an inkling of what was going on. The facts of the case only apparently came to light because of a rift that occurred within the group that was responsible for these terrible acts. It is indeed unfortunate that the sexual abuse of children is quite prevalent in our depraved society, where illiteracy, poverty and the criminal mind work against the less fortunate and weaker individuals. Although the Punjab chief minister has taken notice of the scandal, there is little hope of justice being done in this case. The local administration and the police are still trying to cover up this criminal activity. I would appeal to the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take suo-motu notice of the scandal.
