Justice Khawaja, the senior most judge in the apex court after the incumbent chief Justice Nasirul Mulk, would take the charge of his new office on August 17.
Chief Justice Mulk is due to retire on August 16.
Justice Khawaja was born on September 10, 1950, in Wazirabad, District Gujranwala. He completed his graduation in Arts from FC College, Lahore in 1971 before taking up LLB from the Punjab University Law College, Lahore, completing it in 1973. He then obtained a Masters in Law (LL.M) degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975.
Thereafter he was enrolled as Advocate of the High Court in 1975 and as an Advocate of the Supreme Court in 1985. He was a regular legal practitioner until his appointment as a Judge of the Lahore High Court on April 21, 1999.
Justice Khawaja resigned his constitutional tenure on March 19 2007.
After resigning, he taught law at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and headed the Department of Law and Policy at LUMS.
He was then appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on June 5, 2009, by then Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
