Swati calls Benazir Income Support Program 'bogus'

Swati says the BISP will benefit only a few but on the whole it will harm the country.

Former Minister Azam Khan Swati of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazlur Rehman (JUI-F) on Tuesday termed the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) as “bogus” and “corrupt.”

Swati said that the government’s decision to cut down the budget for higher education by Rs30 billion to facilitate the BISP may benefit some people, but on the whole, will greatly harm the country.

He said that countries do not move forward on the basis of charity, but rather through advancements in science and technology, higher education and vocational training.

Swati was removed from the post of minister for science and technology after he had alleged former minister of religious affairs Hamid Saeed Kazmi to be involved in the Hajj scam, which according to Interior Minister Rehman Malik included corruption worth Rs1.6 million.

In-house change possible

Speaking alongside Swati, JUI-F Secretary General Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri said that an in-house change is possible, if bigger parties like Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid-i-Azam (PML-Q) take some decision in this regard.

Haideri also blamed the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) for failing to fulfil its promises with its coalition partners.

Citing an example, Haideri said the PPP had gone back on its promise with the PML-N for the restoration of judges.

No decision on leaving provincial governments yet

JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said he has not yet decided whether or not to leave the Balochistan government.

Talking to the media at his residence alongside Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani, the JUI-F chief said his party will reach some decision with mutual consultation for which the party's central executive committee meeting has been called tomorrow.

Rehman said his party left the federal government but quitting the decision to leave the provincial governments has yet not been taken.

Raisani said he does not feel any danger regarding change of his government. He said he does not care if his government is demolished.

Earlier, both the leaders had a meeting in which they discussed the current political situation in the country as well as political scenario of Balochistan.

Zeeshan | 13 years ago | Reply I also think BISP is a bogus programs. This program is for peoples that have less then 5000 pay. Govt will pay just 1000 monthly to them. Mean 6000. Can a family run on 6000 in these days?. Has u ever seen half page advertising on newspaper? Why that publicity. ?? that cost millions. n govt is not asking any application in that advertising. Do u know any one who deserve this money and getting. i know many pplz who deserve this fund but not a single one getting any pisasa.I think govt is giving these type of funds to their pplz. Like politician use our zakat for giving pay to their pplz Can u find any example of this type program in any other country? u should provide fund(Interest free) to peoples so they can do business and other get involve in them so minimum they get salary. Like this we can increase our country GDP and our country can grow

Where was Mr. Swati when these forms were distributed in his constituency? Sadly when these Government officials leave there positions they remind there fellow countrymen about the wrong doings.

Majid Maqsood | 13 years ago | Reply Why Mr Sawati did not object on Benzair Income support program when he was enjoying the Govt, he never objected in assembly on BISP but now he has started to blame Govt as has been sacked from his Ministry on dishonored his oath in which he was not supposed go against any minister public until and unless something may be proved. He should have resigned and then objected on Kazami sb but this guy dishonored his oath and went against Minister. PM was compelled to sake him after his hypo critic attitude in cabinet. I dont defend Government there may be corruption in many departments but there must be some ethical grounds to go against and plea on any accused. Actually these people are using religion in politics and for their vested interest which leads more embarrassment for Islamic World. Mr. Sawati and Kazmi belong to different sects so both blaming each others, but its not way to blame until and unless something is proved and this is also a Islamic teaching. This Sawati always abuses USA but his kids are living in USA, if you dont like any country then you should not go into that country. He also claims that he has surrendered his USA nationality but when he was stopped at UAE airport, he told lie to the Airport personnel that he is still a National of USA so he may be permitted but later he was shown document in which he had signed to surrender his Nationality. One cant believe what time they tell lie or truth so nobody can rely on them. I think BISP program is a great deal of support for poor people of this country and there is no any discrimination in this program and all people of this country are being supported by Govt. Sawati sb may be right saying Nation can be uplifted with new technology and institution but i believe those institutions which are already established in the country facing many issues and not giving the production, so its high time to revamp our already established educational institutions for which all political parties can play their role including the party of Mr Sawati.
